This is a personal project I created for Stylecraft Project on Motion Science. The brief was to create a Screen Graphic with Star Maps that convey complex, decoded data on star systems. The brief was to create organic elements combined with grid systems and incorporating Ancient Symbols. For this project I decided to use the Star system as a backdrop and make the screen more ethereal and holographic as if it is suspended in space.
This is a project breakdown case Study of the screen graphics animation. Part of the brief is that the animation is for a film and was created as an assignment project for Stylecraft by Motion Science which is a year-long program teaching high-level motion graphics.
The project was lots of fun but came with its own set of challenges including specific guidlines set out in the brief as to what the client was looking for in terms of the mood and style of the piece as well as some links to reference screen graphics from other Hollywood movies and TV shows.
My first step was to create a moodboard of elements gathered to use for inspiration and ideas for generating vector screen graphic assets in Illustrator.
Three sets of Moodbaords were created with each one having a specific theme relevant to the style and mood of the piece according to the brief.

The first moodboard was based on design elements. Images were chosen that closely matched what was laid out in the brief and what most closely matched the style I was looking to create. In this part of the process I was looking for more organic and circular screen graphics with asymmetrical grid systems.
The second moodboard was based on the colour and tone of the piece. As it was to be a more organic piece I decided to go with more muted colours for the background but then gave the screen elements more contrast with neon to make them more visually appealing and striking.
The third moodboard was based on Ancient Symbols. For this section I focused on collecting images of sacred geometry and some organic fractal patterns that exist in nature for inspiration.
The fourth moodbaord was based on texture and I chose a mixture of organic and digital textures to show how technological elements can be combined with organic elements to create data driven screen graphics that can present complex data in a simplified interface.

Screen graphic elements created within Illustrator were brought into After Effects and these were combined with Graphics and animated elements from within After Effects using shape layers and Red Giant’s Trapcode Form for the landscape on the screen in shot 3.
